EMS Course Descriptions


EMS 100 First Responder
A first aid course designed for people who want to work as a first responder, and rescue personnel who need emergency care training. Lifesaving techniques are taught to stabilize the patient until the ambulance arrives. Upon successful completion of this course and the state written and practical exams, the student will be eligible for Maine State Licensure.
Pre-requisites: reading comprehension.
51 hours classroom. 2 Cr.

EMS 123 Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
This course is designed for those individuals interested in becoming involved in prehospital emergency medical care: ambulance and rescue personnel, police officers, and firefighters. The course contains 117 hours of lecture and practical experience. In addition, approximately 16 hours (minimum of 5 patient contacts) will be spent in a local hospital emergency department or ambulance service observing and assisting the healthcare team. At the conclusion of the course, students may take the National Registry Basic EMT examinations.  Due to the high number of classroom hours, some classes may be held on Saturdays and some EMCC holidays may not be observed - instructor will provide more details.
Pre-requisites: immunization requirements; reading comprehension.
117 hours classroom; approx. 16 hours clinical. 5 Cr.

EMS 201 EMT-Intermediate
Building on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Basic EMT course, this EMT-Intermediate program covers anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, airway assessment and management, recognition and management of shock, and cardiac disorders. The course is open to currently licensed Basic EMT's who are recommended by their ambulance or rescue service and who are selected by a screening committee of the EMS Regional Council. Clinical experience will include time to observe and assist in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Units, Operating Room, and Respiratory Therapy. The focus for these experiences is endotracheal intubations, IV insertions, and cardiac monitoring. This is a state-approved training program following state and national guidelines and curriculum. Upon successful completion of all parts of the course, the student is eligible for the state written and practical licensing examination for Advanced EMT-Intermediate.
Pre-requisites: immunization requirements; reading comprehension; liability insurance required; medical knowledge written entrance exam.
72 hours classroom; 76 hours clinical; 24 hours field. 6 Cr.

CEDN 25 EMS Refresher
This refresher course for Emergency Medical Services personnel satisfies the educational requirements for relicensure as a Maine Emergency Medical Technician, First Responder or Licensed Ambulance Attendant and for registration in the National Registry of EMT's. The course contains a review of Department of Transportation theory and skill objectives, an EMS update, and a Basic EMS Skills Lab. CPR recertification is not included.
26 hours classroom. 

Paramedic I & II & III
Students must be licensed at the EMT-Intermediate level prior to entry into this course. A screening committee will select the course participants after a screening process. This is a three-semester program which follows national and state curriculums dealing with such topics as cardiac emergencies, trauma, pediatric, OB/GYN, medical, environmental, and behavioral emergencies. Once accepted into the program, the fee for the course is non-refundable. Upon successful completion of all parts of the program, the student is eligible to sit for the National Registry written and practical licensure examinations.
Pre-requisites: reading comprehension; medical knowledge written entrance exam; liability insurance required; immunization requirements.
220 hours classroom; 188 hours clinical; 96 hours field. 

EMT Bridge
This course prepares the student to upgrade licensure from Licensed Ambulance Attendant to Basic EMT. At the conclusion of this course, students may take the Maine EMS Basic EMT licensure exams.  Like the Basic EMT course, the EMT Bridge course includes clinical rotations (a minimum of 5 patient contacts - approx. 16 hours) in a local hospital emergency department or ambulance service.
72 hours classroom; approximately 16 hours clinical.

Pre-requsite Information: Some of the courses above make note of pre-requisites and requirements. Details of those pre-requisites and requirements are listed below:

  • Immunizations - Four immunizations are required for any course containing clinical rotations: EMT-Bridge, Basic EMT, Intermediate, and Paramedic. Start now! You must show official proof of all required immunizations within 30 days of the start of the course or you will be withdrawn from the course (no refunds). Forms for documentation are available through the EMTC registration office.
  • Reading Comprehension - Students will be required to take a reading comprehension exam prior to the first night of class. It will take 25-40 minutes and has 25 questions. Students must pass at the 9th grade reading level to take the Basic EMT course and at the 10th grade level to take the Intermediate or Paramedic course. If the student fails the reading comprehension exam, the college will refund the total amount of money paid for tuition, lab fee, and registration fee. Refresher course students are exempt.
  • Medical Knowledge - Students wishing to take an EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic course are required to take a medical knowledge written entrance exam to assist with the selection of students for the course.
